From Notebooks to Models: Protect AI's Comprehensive Open-Source Security Solutions

Open-source environments, especially in the domains of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), offer unparalleled transparency, collaboration, and innovation, with a vast community of developers and experts contributing to and refining the code. However, this openness can also be a double-edged sword. While the collective scrutiny often leads to rapid identification and rectification of vulnerabilities, it also exposes the software to potential malicious actors who can study the code for weak points to exploit. Ensuring security in open-source AI and ML environments is therefore critical. Adopting best practices such as regular code audits, maintaining an active community of vigilant contributors, and leveraging tools designed specifically for AI/ML security can help safeguard these environments against potential threats and malicious attacks.

On October 5, 2023, Protect AI, a front-runner in AI and ML security, unveiled a suite of open-source software tools aimed at bolstering the defense of AI and ML environments. Dedicated to spearheading security measures in the AI/ML landscape, the company has crafted and will maintain three pivotal tools, namely NB Defense, ModelScan, and Rebuff. These instruments are engineered to pinpoint vulnerabilities in AI and ML systems and are available under the Apache 2.0 licenses. The rise of open-source software (OSS) has fueled rapid innovation and given businesses an edge, but it has also inadvertently introduced security concerns, especially within the AI and ML arenas. Determined to bridge this gap, Protect AI is championing the cause of a safer AI-driven future by fortifying the AI/ML supply chain.

The initiative extends beyond the company's recent launch of Huntr, the pioneering AI/ML bug bounty platform. These novel OSS tools, each tailored for a distinct purpose, offer unparalleled security: NB Defense focuses on Jupyter notebook security, ModelScan scrutinizes model artifacts, and Rebuff addresses LLM Prompt Injection Attacks. When used either in isolation or integrated into the Protect AI Platform, they deliver comprehensive security insights into ML systems, including a unique ML Bill of Materials (MLBOM) to help organizations identify and address ML-specific threats.

NB Defense stands out as a pioneer in Jupyter Notebook security. Recognizing the vast popularity of Jupyter Notebooks among data scientists and the associated risks, Protect AI developed this tool to scan notebooks for potential threats, such as leaked credentials, PII breaches, licensing disputes, and more. Similarly, ModelScan, realizing the absence of security checks in shared ML models, screens models for malicious code embedded during serialization. In a different stride, following its acquisition in July 2023, Rebuff has been meticulously maintained by Protect AI as a robust defense against LLM Prompt Injection Attacks, with mechanisms that filter out malevolent inputs, recognize attack patterns, and prevent recurrent threats.

Highlighting the vision behind these ventures, Ian Swanson, the CEO of Protect AI, remarked, "The goal behind open-sourcing NB Defense, Rebuff, and ModelScan is to spotlight the urgent need for AI safety and offer ready-to-use tools to secure AI/ML ecosystems." Protect AI, founded by AI stalwarts from Amazon and Oracle and backed by prominent investors, continues its mission from its bases in Seattle, Dallas, and Raleigh, striving to redefine security standards in the AI and ML world.
